Suminagashi Marbling II - Color and Composition with Heather Batts 4/27/25

“A picture of wind on water.” This is what Suminagashi artist Mary Wipf calls the prints made from this deeply contemplative, intuitive process of floating ink on water and recording it on paper.

Originating in 12th century Japan, suminagashi marbling is the oldest known form of marbling, harnessing the surface tension created by water and air to produce original artworks.

Due to the high levels of creative surrender involved, Suminagashi is a remarkable way to unlock stuck creativity, promote mental well-being, and enter the coveted state of childlike play that Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, who coined the term FLOW, calls “the secret happiness.”

In our second level class, we will delve more deeply into the history, processes and techniques of this ancient art form, adding colored inks and focusing on more advanced compositions.

For best results, students will have taken Suminagashi Marbling I - Mindful and Minimal before attending this class, but all are welcome.

All materials are included and all skill levels welcome.

Heather holds a BFA degree with a specialization in oil painting. Endlessly curious, she discovered the practice of suminagashi in 2023, and was instantly drawn to its simple elegance, its lessons, and its boundless potential to free her from her inner critic.
