A foundational introduction to working with soft pastels, designed for beginners or anyone looking to reconnect with the medium.

We’ll cover the essentials - how to create, handle and store pastel works, build smooth color study gradients, and layer color with intention. Students will learn techniques for creating depth, softness, and light, while beginning to explore simple subject matter like horizons and subtle landscapes or patterns.

This workshop focuses on building confidence with the material and understanding how to achieve a luminous, blended finish.

Katie Rodgers is an artist known for her luminous pastel work capturing light, movement, and atmosphere. Drawing from gardening, a love of adventure, and the quiet transitions of dawn and dusk across the Southwest landscape, her work unfolds through soft, layered color and an imaginative lens on the natural world.

Her signature approach - focused on blending, subtle gradients, and creating a sense of glow - creates a distinctive sense of depth and luminosity.
