Color and Form: Matisse’s Cut Outs + Watercolor and Gouache w Deborah Stein 9/6/25

Color and Form: Matisse’s Cut Outs + Watercolor and Gouache w Deborah Stein 9/6/25
Join Deborah and LDBA for a new workshop to explore in-depth the approach and techniques of Matisse and his Cut Outs. Learn more about his work and influences and practice what it is like to collage collaboratively and alone and on a grand scale as he did.
Playing with the transparency of LDBA’s handmade watercolor and the creamy opaqueness of gouache, we’ll go deep into color harmonies and have fun with form to make beautiful compositions practicing his collage techniques.
With both natural forms and bright colorful objects on the table to inspire, Deborah will lead you through new kinds of paint experiments and show you how to lay down big washes of texture and color with our largest brushes. We’ll have fun with both drawn and improvisational paper cutting and practice Matisse’s technique of moving and pinning cut elements around to find the strongest symphonies and balance in his compositions. You’ll even learn his gluing techniques so the pieces seem to hover and leave with beautiful pictures in the most gorgeous joyful color combinations.
All skill levels welcome and all materials provided.
