Simple Bookbinding with Heather Batts 10/3/26
Interested in bookbinding?
Whilst we are lucky to live an age of information at our fingertips, the dizzying array of internet tutorials and art/craft stores brimming with books on bookbinding can be overwhelming.
It is immensely helpful to start your journey with personal supervision from a knowledgeable guide. In this new class in our beautiful Atelier, Heather will not only teach the basic skills to get you on your way, she will help you sift through the slew of information and provide curated resources for further investigation.
In this playful and progressive introduction to book arts*, we will explore paper, terminology and basic tools, have lively discussions about what, exactly, is a book (more complex than you might think!), and introduce 3 adhesive-free, beginner-friendly binding methods: 1) the Single-sheet Folded Book, 2) the Pamphlet Bind, and 3) the Japanese Stab Bind, providing you with solid grounding and basic skills for future, more complex bookbinding methods.
Not planning to do a deep dive but have a curious mind and a thirst for skills? This class is also for you! You will leave with 3 simple books to bring home, enjoy, or give away.
And we will, of course, finish with fun! Using any remaining time, we will discuss and begin embellishing your simple books with fabric straps and/or simple cover art.
All tools and materials are provided, but feel free to bring any bookmaking ingredients that inspire you! If you have taken Heather’s companion class, Suminagashi Marbling, make sure to bring some of your hand-marbled papers to use in your books!
*Safety disclaimer - precise bookbinding requires the use of sharp tools, however, Heather will introduce low-risk methods for breaking down paper (tearing and scissors) for anyone who needs it.
