Paper dolls are not for kids only!

Join us to play and make gorgeous objets d’art: paper dolls and leperellos (aka accordion books) in a workshop devoted to exploration, experimentation and the creative process! 

This is a brand new iteration of one of Deborah’s most beloved workshops where you’ll play while entertaining new ideas about water and color, pattern histories and the natural world as well as portraiture, fashion and our inner worlds with fun prompts and exercises to make two kinds of paper dolls. Alongside the dolls you'll also learn the art of accordion book-making in different forms to create unfolding stories, painted, drawn and collaged from our earlier notes, scraps and ideas. 

We’ll consider ways to express humans, fauna and flora through the art of the paper doll, with inspiration from folk art from old cultures and faraway places. We’ll also look at paper cutting and paper dolls in high art and design by artists such as Kiki Smith, Hans Christian Anderson and Alexander Girard. With these as our keys, we’ll open new portals to create creatures which come to life as we depict humanness, animalness, and flower-ness through the process of painting and drawing, cutting and folding, creating and collaborating. 

All materials and many surprises provided but you are welcome to bring your own glue stick, scissors, collage materials or anything else you think might be fun.

For adults and artists of all skill levels who want to play and expand their ideas of what art can be and activate!
