aprons: the catchall

LDBA- Brooklyn, NY
Vintage denim work aprons available for sale in the shop. Vintage photograph of an apron-clad blacksmith, Edith Heath at work, (photo courtesy of Apiece Apart).
The apron is considered the most ancient of all garments. An apron is worn for practical, decorative, as well as ritualistic purposes. “Apron” comes from the french word ‘naperon’, meaning a small table cloth. Besides being incredibly functional in protecting ones’ clothes, aprons have been worn to indicate status and depict the rank or a group affiliation of the wearer and have appeared as cultural icons.
I found these aprons in Brimfield, MA. They are for sale as well as my locally made, beautiful, sturdy, jjr. adjustable aprons. Happy Shopping!

the perfect men’s shirt

LDBA-Brooklyn, NY
Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in “Out of Africa”, Katherine Hepburn circa 1930’s, all wearing men’s shirts,  and the jjr. men’s shirt for sale now on LDBA!

In 1871, Brown, Davis & Co. registered the first shirt with buttons that were placed all the way down the front of the shirt, (until then shirts were mostly pullovers). The use of shirts as an “outwearing garment” started towards the end of the 19th century. By 1920, this style became widely accepted.
Most of my favorite women in the world have dressed in men’s shirts.
I believe the jjr. Men’s shirt is the perfect shirt for both men and women.  Available in fine cotton, this shirt will wear beautifully and quickly become your favorite!

Mercury in Retrograde. July 15-August 8, 2012
Astrology can be thought of as a tool; a tool that can make you aware of patterns in your life that are both useful and no longer relavent. Many of these patterns are strongly visible when Mercury goes retrograde.
Mercury in retrograde gives us time to slow down,  reflect, and catch up with ourselves. The past returns for review, and perhaps there’s something more to be learned or released. Review your goals and dreams, strengthen creative work and projects already started. Among other things, Mercury is the planet of  communication, so take it easy if words seem jumbled and frustration abounds. Contracts are more effective if they are signed after Mercury goes direct, and give yourself a little extra time to travel.

LDBA’s online shop will be up and running on Monday, July 23, 2012.

Smudge sticks

Smudge stick photo by Susan Layne, sagebrush watercolor by Morton Birkin, northern New Mexican landscape photo courtesy of Audubon Rockies, smudge sticks for sale soon (photo by RTS, More & Co.)

A little history.
Smudging is a tradition that goes back thousands of years, and is the common name given to the indigenous American tradition known as the Sacred Bowl Blessing. This powerful cleansing technique calls upon the spirits of various sacred plants to drive away negative energy and restore balance to an individual, a group, or a space. Energetic clearing happens by lighting the end of the smudge stick, blowing out the flame, and sweeping the smoke around with your hand or a feather. The smell of sage is invigorating and reminds me of my home in New Mexico. The sticks I will be selling come from the plains of Northern New Mexico.
